Practical engineering guide for minimizing material waste and maximizing yield across woodworking, CNC routing, laser cutting, and sign printing workflows.
Detailed Guides Based on the Current Calculator
Independent workflow guides grounded in MOACUT's rectangular placement logic, result fields, and implemented export boundaries.
2D nesting arranges rectangular parts on flat stock sheets to estimate sheet requirements and expose unused material area.
MOACUT expands quantities into individual rectangles, sorts larger areas first, and checks bottom-left candidate positions on existing sheets. Parts that do not fit open a new sheet. This is a practical heuristic, not a guarantee of a global optimum.
2. Calculating Material Utilization & Scrap Rate
MOACUT instantly reports precise material efficiency metrics for each sheet and the total project upon calculation.
Material Yield Formula
Utilization Rate (%) = (Total Area of Placed Parts / Total Area of Used Sheets) × 100 Scrap Rate (%) = 100% - Utilization Rate (%)
For instance, 2.68㎡ of pure rectangular part area on one 1220x2440mm sheet (about 2.977㎡) reports approximately 90.0% utilization and 10.0% scrap.
3. The Significance of Blade Kerf
Every physical cutting tool removes a specific thickness of material during cutting. This lost width is referred to as Kerf.
Saw Cutting: Confirm the required part clearance for the actual blade, stock, and cutting plan.
CNC Routers: The field controls rectangle spacing and does not replace CAM cutter compensation.
Laser Cutting: Use spacing validated for the machine and material; review thermal process limits separately.
Print Finishing: Include the process-required bleed and cutting clearance in each rectangular planning area.
At zero kerf, rectangle edges may touch in the layout. Confirm whether that is valid for the real toolpath and any approved common-line strategy.
4. Sheet Edge Margins
Raw sheet edges frequently suffer shipping damage or require border clearance for CNC mechanical clamps and vacuum gaskets. Setting an Edge Margin (e.g. 10mm) restricts placement strictly to the safe usable interior area.
5. 90° Rotation & Wood Grain Alignment
Permitting 90° rotation lets the placement test both width-height orientations, increasing the available layout choices.
Rotation Allowed: Ideal for isotropic materials like foam boards, clear acrylic, and solid plastics.
Grain Fixed (Rotation Locked): Essential for natural hardwood veneers, brushed metals, and directional prints where visual grain must stay parallel.

7. Bulk Import via CSV Files
Prepare Width, Height, Quantity rows in a spreadsheet, save as CSV, and import them within the account and 10,000-piece calculation limits.
8. Layout Review and DXF/PDF Export
Results are displayed as responsive SVG in the browser, but the current UI does not download a standalone SVG file. Printing is available, while authenticated Pro users can request server-generated 1:1 CAD DXF and vector PDF exports.
